About Camp Hope
In keeping with our mission, Blue Ridge Hospice has been providing grief support for local area children through our
annual Camp Hope Program since 2006. This FREE camp is designed to provide support and education for children ages 7-16 who have experienced the death of someone close to them; a loved one, family member, friend or classmate.
Typically, 30 - 40 Blue Ridge Hospice employees, and trained volunteers are needed to provide staffing for the overnight,
two day camp. Carefully planned activities are designed to give children opportunities to process feelings and emotions
in a safe environment and may include painting, drawing, collage making, play acting, singing, CD creation, therapy
dogs, outdoor exercises and a memorial service.
Many parents of camp attendees have expressed that they have seen a marked improvement in overall behavior of their children as a result of camp. Improvements like lessened aggression, higher school performance, better sleep habits, and lower instances of emotional disturbances are all measurable benefits of attending Camp Hope.
“The biggest thing I believe my child learned was that she is not alone and it is ok to feel the way she does.
It eased her in a lot of ways.” – Camp Hope attendee parent
Blue Ridge Hospice is the only organization in the Shenandoah area that provides this kind of community service, and to date we have helped over 348 children and their families through our Camp Hope Program. Many of the children we serve come from families that would not otherwise have access to this level of support. Camp Hope as a way to meet that need without any cost to those we serve. The benefit to the community is exponential.
Donations
Camp Hope relies on the generous support of local community organizations, companies, and individuals to help provide this free service to the community. With this in mind, Blue Ridge Hospice is always seeking sponsors for this special event. In addition to monetary donations, we have various needs that may include arts and craft supplies, small pillows, LED flashlights, sleeping bags, and items for self-care bags such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, floss, and toothbrushes. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated. To make a donation or inquire about specific camp needs for this year, please call (540) 536-5210.
